First-Time Boat Rental Guide: Your Easy, Epic Day on Lake Coeur d’Alene

If you’re renting a boat for the first time with Kent’s Boats, you’re in for the best kind of adventure. Picture this: blue water, mountain views, and zero stress. We’ve been helping folks just like you have a blast on Lake CDA for over 30 years, and we keep things simple, friendly, and fun. We prefer that you have previous boating experience to rent with us for the safety of your passengers and everyone else on the lake. Text Kent before booking if you are unsure about your abilities.

This guide walks you through everything — from what to pack to the easy rules we all follow — so you can focus on making memories instead of worrying. Let’s get you on the water!

Booking Is a Breeze

You can book online 24/7 or just text or call Kent directly at (208) 762-7570. He’s the owner and loves chatting with first-timers. A credit card holds your spot (super easy), and you can even pay cash at the dock if you arrange it ahead of time. Single-day rentals are paid in full when you book; multi-day trips need a deposit with the rest due a couple weeks before.

Pro tip: Book early — our boats fill up fast in the summer!

What to Do Before You Arrive at the Dock

  • Sign the rental agreement/waiver — It’s quick, standard stuff that just covers the basics so everyone stays protected. All adults need to sign the waiver.

  • Then head to the second set of docks to meet Kent — He’ll walk you through the boat, show you the controls, point out any lake hazards (like those sneaky floating logs called “deadheads”), and answer every question you have. That’s it — no long lectures, just a friendly handoff so you’re ready to go.

What to Bring (Keep It Light!)

We supply the important stuff so you don’t have to: life vests for everyone, safety gear, 2 towels per boat, an ice chest (bring your own ice or buy some), Bluetooth stereo, bimini top for shade, and all the water-sport toys (tubes, skis, wakeboard — just ask!).

Here’s what we recommend you toss in:

  • Swimsuit and extra clothes (in case you get splashed)

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat

  • Snacks, drinks, and towels

  • Phone in a waterproof case + charger

  • Camera or GoPro for those “we were here!” pics

  • Cash or card for gas at our dock (you buy what you use) and any little extras

Travel light and have fun — no need to overpack!

Our Simple Rental Requirements

We keep it straightforward because we want everyone to have a great time:

  • You (the renter/operator) must be 21 or older with a valid driver’s license. No special boating license needed in Idaho.

  • You should feel comfortable behind the wheel. If it’s your first time or you’re a little nervous, just let Kent know — he’ll make sure you’re confident before you leave the dock.

  • Passenger and weight limits are non-negotiable (and they’re clearly posted on every boat because they’re U.S. Coast Guard approved). For example:

    • Premium 25′ Pontoon: up to 13 passengers / 1,770 lbs

    • Performance Tri-Toon: up to 14 passengers / 1990 lbs

    • Regal Ski Boat: up to 9 passengers (6 adults max)

    • Fishing Boat: up to 4 adults

    • Exceeding them isn’t safe and can end the rental early — so we all stick to the numbers and keep the good vibes going.

Dogs? Totally welcome with Kent’s okay ahead of time (under 25 lbs, $50 fee).

Safety Basics

Safety doesn’t mean boring — it just means more fun because everyone stays happy and dry. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Life vests — We provide one for every person. Kids 14 and under on boats 19 feet or shorter must wear them when the boat is moving (Idaho law). We recommend everyone wears one — they’re comfy and quick to grab.

  • Stay within limits — Respect the Coast Guard capacity plate on your boat. It’s there to keep the ride stable and safe.

  • No wake zones — In Kootenai County (that’s us!), keep it to 5 mph within 200 feet of shore, docks, swimmers, or anyone in the water. Same idea on rivers — 100 feet. Easy rule that keeps the lake chill for everyone.

  • Speed limits — 50 mph max daytime on the lake, 25 mph at night.

  • Captain rules — No drinking and boating (Idaho law — zero tolerance for operating under the influence). Stay alert, watch for logs, and keep everyone seated safely.

Kent will go over all of this with you at the dock in about two minutes. Super low-key.

Idaho Boating Laws (The Short, Easy List)

Idaho keeps things straightforward for boaters:

  • One Coast Guard-approved life jacket per person (we’ve got you covered).

  • No operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

  • Kids 14 and under must wear their life jacket on smaller boats when underway.

  • No-wake speed near people, docks, and shore (we already mentioned that one).

  • NO BOATING ALLOWED on the Coeur d’Alene or St. Joe Rivers — they’re too skinny for our boats. (our rule)

That’s pretty much it! The boat is fully registered and equipped, so you don’t have to worry about any of the technical stuff.

Ready to Make Some Waves?

That’s all there is to it! First-time renting should feel exciting, not intimidating — and with Kent’s Boats, it really does. We’re right on the water, parking is free, and we’re here to make sure you have the best day possible.
